In short, our Homo sapiens brain is equipped with two modes of learning:an active mode, in which we test hypotheses against the outside world likegood scientists, and a receptive mode, in which we absorb what others transmit to us without personally verifying it. The second mode, through a cultural ratchet effect, is what allowed the extraordinary expansion of humansocieties over the past fifty thousand years.
